Illustrative review · English and Hindi

Medical appointment: look closely at the meaning.

Explore four fictional excerpts. Compare the source, one possible interpretation and an example response, then read what to review.

A teaching example, not a scored result

These are not a complete test or a learner’s recordings. No exam mark, pass verdict or delivery assessment can be inferred. The reference wording is one possible rendering, not the only acceptable answer.

Review each excerpt

Open an excerpt to compare the wording. Look for missing meaning before treating a different choice of words as an error.

Source

Good morning, I'm Dr. Smith. I understand you've been experiencing some chest pain. Can you tell me when it started?

One possible interpretation

नमस्ते, मैं डॉ. स्मिथ हूं। मुझे पता चला है कि आपको सीने में दर्द हो रहा है। क्या आप बता सकते हैं कि यह कब शुरू हुआ?

Example response

नमस्ते, मैं डॉ. स्मिथ हूं। आपको सीने में दर्द हो रहा है। यह कब शुरू हुआ?

Review the speaker’s stance

The example leaves out “I understand” and shortens the polite question. Compare whether the doctor’s reported understanding and request are still conveyed. This observation does not establish a numerical deduction.

Source

जी, करीब तीन दिन पहले शुरू हुआ। खाने के बाद ज्यादा तकलीफ होती है।

One possible interpretation

Yes, it started about three days ago. The discomfort is worse after eating.

Example response

Yes, it started about three days ago. The pain is worse after eating.

Allow context-sensitive wording

The source follows a discussion of chest pain. “Pain” and “discomfort” should be considered in that context; a difference from the reference wording alone does not prove an error.

Source

I see. Have you noticed any other symptoms like shortness of breath, nausea, or sweating?

One possible interpretation

अच्छा। क्या आपने कोई अन्य लक्षण देखे हैं जैसे सांस फूलना, मतली, या पसीना आना?

Example response

अच्छा। क्या आपने कोई और symptoms देखे हैं जैसे सांस फूलना या पसीना आना?

Restore the missing symptom

The list omits nausea (मतली). Restore that symptom when interpreting the question. The English word “symptoms” is a separate language-use question; borrowing is not automatically an error under NAATI’s Hindi policy.

Source

हां, कभी-कभी सांस लेने में दिक्कत होती है। और कल रात को बहुत पसीना आया था।

One possible interpretation

Yes, sometimes I have difficulty breathing. And last night I was sweating a lot.

Example response

Yes, sometimes breathing is difficult. And yesterday night I was sweating very much.

Distinguish phrasing from changed meaning

“Yesterday night” refers to the same night here; “last night” is the more natural phrasing in this reference. Review “sweating very much” for natural expression. No audio is supplied, so pauses, fillers and pronunciation cannot be assessed.

Use a suggestion as a reason to check.

In your own practice, listen back and compare the transcript with your recording. AI feedback can be mistaken. A reference difference, a borrowed word or a transcription error should not automatically become a deduction.
