Build on Your Bangla
Practise transferring the whole message

Knowing both languages gives you a foundation for interpreting.

Practice helps you listen, keep track of details and express them in the other language.

CCL assesses communication between English and Bangla through recorded dialogues.

Details to review in your practice:

  • •Word choices and borrowed terms (Benglish): check the language-specific policy
  • •Words you skip without realizing (omissions)
  • •Formality that fits the speakers (আপনি vs তুমি)

Choose one detail to review, then try it again in context.

Bangla Interpreting Details to Practise

Compare each source with the example interpretation and choose a detail to review.

NAATI does not penalise English words that Bangla speakers regularly and commonly use. Focus on preserving the message: a missing negative can reverse what the speaker said.

English: "I have not submitted the application"
Wrong: আমি আবেদনপত্র জমা দিয়েছি
Correct: আমি আবেদনপত্র জমা দিইনি

দিইনি carries “not”. The first version says the application has been submitted.

Listen for negatives and conditions. Compare the source with your interpretation, and use practice feedback as a prompt to review.

Adjectives, numbers and qualifiers carry information. Check that your interpretation preserves these details.

English: "You have chronic pain in your lower back"
Wrong: আপনার পিঠে ব্যথা আছে
Correct: আপনার নিচের পিঠে দীর্ঘস্থায়ী ব্যথা আছে

"Chronic" (দীর্ঘস্থায়ী) and "lower" (নিচের) are critical — omitting them changes the diagnosis

Review possible omissions in your practice feedback, then compare them with the source. Note the location and duration together.

Choose a form of address that fits the speakers and setting. A professional conversation with a patient calls for respectful language.

English: "You should take this medicine"
Wrong: তুমি এই ওষুধ খাও
Correct: আপনি এই ওষুধ খান

Use আপনি (Apni) in this professional conversation. তুমি (Tumi) and তুই (Tui) are informal.

Practise matching the tone of the conversation as well as its meaning. Consider who is speaking to whom.

NAATI’s CCL test uses Chalit Bangla, the modern colloquial standard based on contemporary spoken Bangla.

English: "What is happening?"
Wrong: কী হইতেছে? (literary Sadhu form)
Correct: কী হচ্ছে?

হইতেছে is a literary Sadhu form; হচ্ছে is the contemporary spoken form.

Practise with contemporary spoken Bangla, as used in the test.

Keep the specific role and legal decision in your interpretation. A general statement about release loses the detail that bail was granted.

English: "The magistrate granted bail"
Wrong: বিচারক তাকে ছেড়ে দিলেন
Correct: ম্যাজিস্ট্রেট জামিন মঞ্জুর করলেন

Magistrate ≠ Judge (বিচারক). Bail (জামিন) ≠ Release (ছেড়ে দেওয়া)

Review legal vocabulary in context, then practise using it in a complete interpretation.

Common Questions

Answers to common preparation questions

Bengali has two varieties: Sadhu Bhasha (archaic literary) and Cholito Bhasha (modern colloquial). NAATI’s CCL test uses Chalit Bangla, the modern colloquial standard based on contemporary spoken Bangla. Sadhu verbs like করিতেছি (koritechi) instead of করছি (korchi) sound archaic in spoken dialogue. Formality comes from vocabulary and address, not archaic verb forms.

Three areas to check: (1) address—আপনি (Apni) suits professionals, while তুমি (Tumi) is familiar; (2) Hindi–Bengali false friends, such as বাল (Bal), which is vulgar in Bengali—use চুল (Chul) for hair; and (3) classifiers (-ta, -jon).

Bengali has three levels: আপনি (Apni - formal), তুমি (Tumi - familiar), and তুই (Tui - intimate). Each takes its own verb endings. আপনি is a respectful choice with professionals; match the formality of the speakers and setting.

Watch for words that mean different things: বাড়ি (Bari) = House in Bengali, but Garden/Turn in Hindi. খুন (Khun) = Murder in Bengali, but Blood in Hindi. বাল (Bal) is a vulgar term in Bengali—use চুল (Chul) for hair. These words can change the meaning or offend the listener.

হলফনামা (Holofnama) is the Bengali term for Affidavit. It comes from Arabic Holof (Oath) + Persian Nama (Document). This Perso-Arabic legal vocabulary is standard in South Asian courts. The alternative শপথ-পত্র (Shopoth-potro) is Sanskritized and less common in practice.

Use আপনি (Apni) forms with doctors, lawyers, magistrates and strangers, with matching verb endings (e.g., জানেন, করুন, বসুন). Addressing a magistrate as তুমি would be inappropriately familiar.

Practise dialogues across a range of community settings, such as health, legal, social services, housing and immigration. We have not verified a published NAATI ranking of how often each domain appears.

Bengali script can be slow to write by hand. Some candidates use romanized abbreviations or symbols in their notes. Example: “The accused has been granted bail” → ACC -> BAIL (Jamin). NAATI permits a pen and loose sheets of paper; use a method you can read back reliably.
